Killer Instinct

"Available for your home in 1995 only on Nintendo Ultra 64- KILLER INSTINCT!" Killer Instinct comes across as a challenger in the fighting game realm at its time against the likes of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. You know you have to bring something special to the table to challenge the likes of games like these. Having said that, did "Killer Instinct" come prepared? You bet! I'll be blogging about Killer Instinct here.

This blog post only pertains to the classic Killer Instinct. This is not a post about Killer Instinct in general.

FIGHT ON!

Killer Instinct

In the 1990s, most of the fighting game realm was dominated by the likes of the Street Fighter series, the Mortal Kombat series, and even the likes of Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodon. So in the case of Killer Instinct, this game needed to provide its own appeal to try to make themselves a viable player in the fighting game genre. Did it ever! "Killer Instinct" debuted in arcades in 1994. It later found its way onto the Super Nintendo and even on Game Boy. I spent a lot of time playing "Killer Instinct" on SNES. Its arcade variant, however, was ahead of its time with amazing 3D graphics in a 2D realm.

So what gives Killer Instinct its character? For one thing, this game is predicated on intense combinations rather than methodically beating your opponent. You start getting notices for your combination attacks if you land at least three hits in a row. Go for the Killer Combo if you can. And if you are REALLY good- go for the... "ULTRA! COMBO!" As much as you can deal combos, be wary of the "C-C-C-C-Combo Breaker!" It won't take much for your opponent to break up your string of successive attacks. There was blood in "Killer Instinct," but nowhere near the gory madness of Mortal Kombat. You can also use Mortal Kombat-style finishing moves to finish off your opponents. In some stages, you can knock opponents out of the stage to certain defeat. For example, on B. Orchid's stage, you can finish your opponent by knocking them off of the tower to the streets below.

What really set apart "Killer Instinct" from its rivals is its fast-paced gameplay and very unrealistic combos. This was no slow game with methodical fighting techniques. It was basically beat your opponent senseless. Changes in momentum made matches exciting in this game. To me, Killer Instinct is more in tune with "Mortal Kombat" games in fighting style than "Street Fighter" games. Fights can be pretty exciting and interesting when someone is defeated. However much health you have left will go into the next "round." So if you are near dying and you just defeat your opponent, you will have little life left once your opponent has full health again. First fighter whose health is depleted twice loses.

The Fighters.

Here are the 11 fighters you will encounter in "Killer Instinct"...

• Jago - a fighting warrior monk armed with a sword.
• T.J. Combo - a disgraced American boxer.
• Black Orchid - a powerful woman.
• Chief Thunder - a powerful Native American Indian fighter.
• Fulgore - a beastly cyborg fighter boasting two claws.
• Sabrewulf - a fierce fighting wolf.
• Riptor - a menacing dinosaur.
• Spinal - a strong skeleton fighter armed with a sword and a shield.
• Glacius - a powerful icy fighter.
• Cinder - this fiery fighter will burn you with his offense.
• Eyedol - the final boss of the game.

If you want to make the most of your experience using each fighter, try to learn putting together various combos. Try even to finish off your opponent with an Ultra Combo. You can even use Finish-style moves to defeat your opponent if you are adept enough.

Now for some final thoughts. Read on...

Killer Instinct: Final Thoughts

"Killer Instinct" is just another example of the wonderful magic Nintendo and RARE made together. This game has withstood the test of time and really established itself even in the wake of the Street Fighter series and Mortal Kombat series. Many people still regard the original "Killer Instinct" as the best in the series and for good reason. I personally have not played the Nintendo 64 or XBOX One "Killer Instinct" titles, but I'm impartial to the original. It all began, though, with this classic of a fighting game. So go enjoy this game if you do get a chance to play it.

This is just the attract sequence, but it does feature a bit of game play to show you what "Killer Instinct" is all about...
