Remembering the A1GP

The A1 Grand Prix was touted as the World Cup of Motorsport. It's very sad a concept like this is no longer around. It was perhaps one of the best international motorsports series besides Formula 1 or the World Rally Championship. What I loved most about the A1GP was the fact that there was national pride and that it was a showcase of talent from many nations. This even included lesser-known international drivers a chance to race for international pride. There were even races around the world that not even F1 competes at. For instance, there were races around the streets of Durban in South Africa, a makeshift (and somewhat controversial) street course in Beijing, Sentul International Circuit in Indonesia, and Taupo Motorsport Park down in New Zealand. The fate dealt to the A1GP was in the form of a lack of financial backing as well as not much engine support.

For what it was, however, it was a true World Cup of Motorsport. Come on now... this provided some of the absolute best in international talent. Perhaps not F1 Grand Prix talent, but it was a proper showcase of international talent. Various nations with various teams competed in main races and sprint races in venues around the world. It's just a shame this series couldn't last longer than it eventually did. I think that maybe one day, the A1 Grand Prix will return and perhaps be bigger and better.

Here is a look back at the A1GP in videos. I chose three videos to showcase the international talent the A1GP provided:

A1GP at Brands Hatch (Feature Race, 2008-2009):

A1GP at Durban (Sprint Race, 2007-2008):

A1GP at Taupo (Feature Race, 2007-2008)
