SmartNews

John B. Marine | 5/13/2021 11:50:00 PM | | | Be the first to comment!
Getting news on your mobile devices can be a cumbersome process. Thankfully, SmartNews attempts to make it easy to get the news you want the way you want it. I will be sure to share with you my thoughts on SmartNews in this blog post. I would like to welcome everyone here, and I hope you get to enjoy your time here on "John's Blog Space!"

Before I Begin...

The following blog post is NOT sponsored. I was not contacted by or requested to blog about this program. I did this on my own terms and with my own commentary.

As this is the review of a mobile application, the post pertains to the application at the time of the original blog post. This review is as accurate as the original date of this blog post (May 13, 2021).

SmartNews

SmartNews is a mobile application that gives you the latest news locally and around the world. It was developed by SmartNews, Inc. There are offices for SmartNews in San Francisco, California, USA and Tokyo, Japan. This app has been in existence since 2012. SmartNews allows you to have various news topics broken down into various categories. You can customize the different news topics you want to see and even get to see news based on your location. So do you want the latest local news in Los Angeles? You can do that with SmartNews. Do you want the latest sports news without having to consult the big networks or any big companies? You can do that with SmartNews. Maybe you want the latest news regarding the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic- you can do that with SmartNews. Basically any news you want delivered to your mobile device can be done through SmartNews!

I discovered SmartNews when I originally used NewsBreak. NewsBreak was great while it lasted, but I eventually moved on to SmartNews. What I enjoy most about SmartNews is how nicely the topics are arranged. SmartNews has a nifty feature that suits mobile devices where if it is taking too long to load up a linked news topic, you can use SmartView to get a less-intensive version of the page while still getting the quality news content you crave. Thankfully, I have a fairly good WiFi connection to where I don't need to wait forever for news topics. Even when the Winter Storm hit Texas in February 2021, I still managed to get a decent look at the news through my 4G LTE smartphone. You can adjust the order of the news topics that matter to you by selecting an order of tabs.

I personally have my SmartNews to fetch top news stories, local (Houston) news stories, international stories, COVID-19/Coronavirus news, and more. If you set up an account, you can have a personalized set of news based on topics that interest you the most. SmartNews simply seeks news stories that spark your interest. While there are ads included in the app, they are not in any way overly obtrusive. It is the news you are looking for with no sort of extra fluff getting in the way.

Final Thoughts.

SmartNews is an app for which you can simply have a host of news topics in a cleverly-curated way. Every sort of news outlet ranging from local news networks to the likes of Bloomberg, Reuters, Sky Sports, ESPN, TMZ, and much more are all available for you on your mobile device to get the news you need without having to look too far. I strongly recommend SmartNews if you simply want a quality news app that fetches lots of stories for you. And if you want, you can set SmartNews to deliver notifications so you can get a handle on some of the latest news topics across many different categories. Getting the news should be simple, easy, and concise. SmartNews lives up to its name by smartly delivering you news articles to categories that matter most to you. STRONGLY recommend.

SmartNews is available for Android and iOS devices. To learn more about SmartNews and to download SmartNews to your mobile device, please visit www.smartnews.com. Spoon Pet Collector

John B. Marine | 7/14/2020 09:50:00 AM | | Be the first to comment!
From the makers of "Neko Atsume," "Spoon Pet Collector" lets you collect adorable animals. Collect and capture various pets. Even scoop them up with a spoon! This game has it all! I review "Spoon Pets Collector" for you all in this blog post. I will let you know what I think about it as I go along.

A Note About Mobile Games...

This is a review of a game as it is as of July 14, 2020. This game may have changed over time based on this initial blog post. This game was reviewed on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

Spoon Pet Collector

"Spoon Pet Collector" was made by the same Japanese developer behind the highly popular "Neko Atsume"- Hit-Point. This game is a collaborative effort of Hit-Point and SEGA TOYS. It was released in 2016, two years after the 2014 game "Neko Atsume." The goal of "Spoon Pet Collector" is to collect and capture various pets to your yard. Just like in "Neko Atsume," doing so means you attract animals to your house by setting up both food and goodies. Unlike "Neko Atsume," however, the animals in this game are not exclusively cats. This game features over 75 adorable pets to collect and capture. Can you capture all of the adorable pets in this game?

"Spoon Pet Collector" is a free game for Android and iOS. In-app purchases can be made within the game.

Game Play.

"Spoon Pet Collector" plays a lot like Neko Atsume, so I will be making a lot of references to Neko Atsume in explaining this game.

The basic food to use is sunflower seeds. You can use other food items from the Shop to attract more pets. A certain combination of food and goodies will yield to getting more of these creatures coming to your house. You can play mini games and take part in other activities to get more content. You can also expand your play field to allow for more goodies and more pets to enter your space. If you establish a good enough relationship between yourself and certain pets, some pets will offer you Mementos- just like in Neko Atsume. Try to get the Mementos for all of the pets if you are about completion. Use the in-game time to set up your yard with food and goodies. Then, close or suspend the app to allow for the animals to interact with your place.

Unlike Neko Atsume, however, you actually have some control over pets and goodies. Unique to this game is a spoon you can use to scoop up pets and place them anywhere where they can be placed. You can not scoop up rare pets, however. You can see how pets interact with certain goodies by scooping them up and placing them around certain goodies. Also unique to "Spoon Pets Collector" is the ability to dress up your pets. These dress-up opportunities come later in the game.

"Spoon Pet Collector" has a currency of Spoons. Certain more prominent items require Gold Spoons. You have various methods of earning each. The safe way (as in not trying to farm or grind or perform some cheat) to earn any kind of Spoons is to let your pets play around and let them offer you Spoons from their visit. You can play mini games to earn some extra spoons. Sometimes, you will see golden advertisements scattered about that can earn you some Spoons (or even Golden Spoons) if you watch the included ads.

Now that you know some of the basics, let me offer my final thoughts on this game from what I have played so far.

Spoon Pets Collector: Final Thoughts

In my research of "Spoon Pets Collector," I saw that one reviewer said that "Spoon Pet Collector" is a great game but lacks the charm of "Neko Atsume." In a way, that is how I feel about "Spoon Pet Collector." Spoon Pet Collector is an adorable game on many levels. I do tend to agree it doesn't have the same level of cuteness and appeal over the older "Neko Atsume." With that said, this is still a very cute and relaxing game to play. It still brings a smile to your face seeing all of the adorableness this game has to offer. Even scooping up these pets and placing them around your playing space is a treat in its own right. You almost wish the pets were real and that you took care of them- just like in Neko Atsume! So go download "Spoon Pet Collector" and have fun collecting these adorable animals!

Cat Game - The Cats Collector!

John B. Marine | 7/05/2020 04:59:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
"Cat Game - The Cats Collector!" by Mino Games puts you in charge of the most elaborate tower housing many cats. Its name is not the most original or catchy, but it aims to provide cat cuteness in a casual game. Collect and enhance your tower with all sorts of cats along with many unique floors. If this is something you are interested in, then feel free to stick around for this blog post, as I review game simply known as... "Cat Game."

A Note About Mobile Games...

This is a review of a game as it is as of July 5, 2020. This game may have changed over time based on this initial blog post. This game was reviewed on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

Cat Game - The Cats Collector!

"Cat Game - The Cats Collector!" was made by a Canadian developer called Mino Games. It is a game where you collect and build up a city tower full of many unique floors and cats. Each of the cats you collect and bring to your tower have their own personalities. Some of the cats you start off with are fairly basic. The floors of the tower even have a certain theme that makes each one unique. For example, my favorite room I have unlocked so far is the Farm floor, featuring cats that think and act like farm animals! They have cute and fun animations that do no fail to bring a smile to your face. Once you get to taking on more cats and floors, though, you get more interesting cats to fill each space. How many cats can you collect? How many floors can you unlock? What awaits you in Cat Game? Get ready for a truly entertaining experience!

"Cat Game" is a free game available for Android and iOS. In-app purchases can be made playing this game.

My Credentials.

I was on Level 10 playing this game in creating this review. I have 51 cats in my play.

Game Play.

Each playing of "Cat Game" begins with cat-related puns. When you begin "Cat Game" for the first time, you begin with a tutorial featuring how the game is played along with your choice of three cats. The tower is not a tower at all early, and the tower is not as elaborate; however, that will change dramatically as you start getting more decorations and cats. These additions will earn you Stars. You will level up to create new floors for your tower when you earn enough Stars. When you level up, you will earn a handful of bonuses.

The currency in "Cat Game" is Coins, and you collect Coins through any number of means. You can earn Coins randomly by seeing gift boxes on each floor. Certain gifts you earn can yield you Coins. Later in the game, you can earn Coins by completing certain tasks using the game's bank. You can even play mini games to earn Coins. Just be sure to have enough Coins to purchase a number of resources. Besides Coins, you also have Gems. Gems are the more premium currency. They usually can be spent in expediting the delivery of baskets or materials. Speaking of...

You can craft materials as well as buy food. Food is good for feeding cats, and materials are good for crafting items to furnish floors of your tower with. Food can be bought either in one of each or ten of each. Only three food items are available at a time. Once a certain amount of time passes, the food will be restocked with new items.

What you want to do is get more cats to your tower. You do so by feeding cats food. You will know which cat is hungry based on a speech bubble above the cat with a picture of a certain kind of food. If you do not have the proper food the cat is craving, you can still feed the cat anything in your collection. Once a cat has been fed, a Basket will be delivered. Each Basket can be delivered granted you have the needed resources. You want to try to pick up a cat. In fact, the basket will give you the percentage of you winning a cat before you decide to deliver the basket. You can either wait for the basket to deliver, or you can expedite the basket's delivery by paying a fee in Gems. You can choose to go for an Extra Spin if you want another chance at picking up a cat if you failed to get one. The Extra Spin requires you to watch an ad. Taking the Extra Spin will give you another chance to get a cat or earn more supplies. There is a limit on how many Extra Spins you can take in a short amount of time, so don't think you can abuse this limit to grind.

A floor is complete when all cats for that floor are unlocked and all decorations have been created. When a floor is complete, you can still deliver baskets on completed floors, but mostly these are there to earn more supplies. You may also earn a Premium Key which will give you unique cats and items. You can also craft Premium Keys if you have the given resources and Coins. If you're the completionist type, there are about 63 floors to unlock for your regular tower, and about 30 floors for your Premium Tower. As far as cats are concerned, the top players have found over 1100 cats.

This game allows for various in-app purchases to gain a boost in resources and game progress. Use your own real money to gain more Coins, Gems, and floors. You can even buy a VIP package that gives you an influx of resources and cats for a monthly fee. Of course, you can play through as much of this game without needing to spend any real money to make a lot of progress. This is not one of those "pay-to-win" games.

Now that you have an idea for the game playing elements, I will offer you my review of this game based on my progress.

"Cat Game" - Final Thoughts

"Cat Game" will not win awards for an original name, but it will be a game that brings a smile to your face with its unique character. The game has a very nice song that plays and loops in the background. It will not frustrate you in any sort of way trying to unlock everything. You will not really feel the need to grind for money. You will enjoy the cats in the tower accompanied by the many different floors unique to their personalities. I can not really find any real faults with "Cat Game" from my play, except that the game kind of stops playing the background song when it loops back to the start sometimes. The game has crashed on me only a few times after viewing an ad video. Other than that, this game will keep you busy and is quite fun.

I couldn't find a decent video to showcase this game, so I invite you to visit the developer's official website for more details. Speaking of which...

FeeDog - Raising Puppies

John B. Marine | 6/27/2020 10:06:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
I am not a dog person. I have been scared of dogs my whole life. At one point after playing so many mobile cat games, something made me look into dog games. So I looked up "FeeDog" by Korean developer Q-SSUM Studio. I will tell you whether or not you should give this game a try with this blog post. I hope you get to enjoy this blog post and my review of "FeeDog."

A Note About Mobile Games...

This is a review of a game as it is as of June 27, 2020. This game may have changed over time based on this initial blog post. This game was reviewed on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

FeeDog

Let's talk about this game.

"FeeDog - Raising Puppies" is a game by Korean developer Q-SSUM Studio. In this game, dogs were enjoying a peaceful and happy time. That is... until a horde of ghosts threatened the peace of dogs everywhere. the goal of this game to defeat the evil ghosts while being properly fed. Also, you will be able to raise some puppies to help you in your battle of suppressing the ghosts.

Game Play.

"FeeDog - Raising Puppies" plays somewhat like an endless runner, only this is not an endless runner. This is in the sense that you keep going until you fail. A bunch of items will come at you while some ghosts also appear. What you must do is either eat the items directed to you or swat them away. What you want your dog to do is to eat the good food and punch away the bad food. If you swat away good food at the enemies, the game continues, but you will need to start a new combo string. If your dog consumes any bad food or gets hit by an enemy, the game is over. Try to generate as good of a combo string as you can to climb through the levels.

There are two main dogs in this game- Lucky and Lack. You start with Lucky. Lucky is a beautiful white dog somewhat styled like something you'd see out of Pusheen. Lack is a dark dog that you can unlock either at Level 90 or for a lot of Gems. Each dog can be upgraded to be more powerful, generate more Coins, and prevent more combos from breaking. An extra boost of ability can be gained by buying and raising puppies. Each puppy you raise can provide a certain perk to you once a certain level has been reached. When a puppy's level is raised to Level 10 or greater, you can perform a Fusion that gives your dog an extra perk to have upgraded abilities. Unfortunately, you can have only one Fusion to a dog at a time. You can select which puppy to fuse with when not playing the main game. You also can name each puppy to whatever you like. For example, in the time of my play of this game, I named my two puppies "Mocha" and "Muffin."

Part of "FeeDog" is on the feeding. When in the main game, items will come from one side of the screen to the other. Your task is to eat the good items and punch away the bad items. For example, items like dog food and bones are GOOD food for your dog. Items like bombs and candy are BAD for your dog. If your dog consumes a bad item, the game will end. How close you are to consuming or punching an item determines how much damage you will do to the enemies. The closer each item is to you before punching them away, the more damage you can deal. You may encounter a boss battle through your play. You must really try to take down each boss as best as you can. Even the bosses themselves have to be punched away to avoid the game coming to an end. Once you eventually face defeat in a game session, you can either restart your run or return home. You can earn extra Gems by either sharing your game moments across social media or by watching ads.

While Coins are the primary currency in FeeDog, you really want to save on Gems. You earn 50 Gems for each day you play the game, and you can earn extra Gems by watching ads. You can buy more Gems by using your real money. The real money can come from either your actual money or from any credits you may have from a gift card. If you can focus your finances one something, invest in Milk to feed your puppies. Try to buy more puppies once you generate enough Gems.

INTERESTING FACT: All food items that are good or bad for dogs in this game are also good or bad for your dog in real life! This game even has little factoids about what makes certain Bad Food items bad for dogs. So you get a little learning experience in this game about dogs!

I will now come up with a review of this game. Please read the next section.

FeeDog: Final Thoughts

It does seem unusual that a cat lover like myself would try a dog game. However, Q-SSUM Studio has done a great job offering a fun and enjoyable game with "FeeDog - Raising Puppies." It has a casual feel to it while also being fairly fun to play. The dogs and the puppies are adorable! I don't have too much to vent about this game except that some of the English translation is not very good. Hardcore English types would complain over grammatical errors in the Korean to English translation. But really, this game is excellent on a number of levels. Surely give this game a try, even if you are not a dog lover!

Video Preview.

Here is a trailer for the game I just reviewed. Take a look:

^ FeeDog - Season 2

For More Information...

Q-SSUM Studio does not have its own website, but you can visit their Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/qssumstudio/. "FeeDog - Raising Puppies" is a free game that allows in-app purchases. It is available for Android and iOS.

CrossWord Jam

John B. Marine | 6/27/2020 09:36:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: May 16, 2023)

Reaady to find some words? "CrossWord Jam" by PlaySimple combines word finding with a bit of world travel. So chill out and try to find some words! Playing a lot like "WordScapes," this game challenges you to swipe across some letters to find as many words as possible. This blog post is a review of "CrossWord Jam."

A Note About Mobile Games...

This is a review of a game as it is as of June 27, 2020. This game may have changed over time based on this initial blog post. This game was reviewed on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

LATEST UPDATE(S)/REVISION(S)...

MAY 16 2023 - added some extra links

CrossWord Jam

From India's PlaySimple Games comes "CrossWord Jam." Similar to "WordScapes" that I reviewed previously, your goal is to find as many words as possible using a given set of letters. Find the words while also getting combos going. There are lot of puzzles and a lot of places to visit. Can you handle the pressure?

"CrossWord Jam" is free to play, but you can purchase material with in-app purchases. Play "CrossWord Jam" each day to earn daily bonuses. These daily bonuses can include more Coins and even some free hints. The prizes get better the more successive days you continue to play this game. It is recommended for you to pay to remove the in-game ads so your performance isn't hindered.

A Game Note...

I was currently on Level 91 playing this game in typing up this blog post.

Playing the Game.

You find words by swiping across a set of letters to find various words. Find as many words as possible to clear each puzzle. You earn bonuses for finding words that are not in the official puzzle. If you really want to succeed in this game, try to find each word while finding many other words in succession. Finding multiple words in succession nets you bonuses. You know you are on a word streak when you see the outsides of your touchscreen glow with stars coming out. Try to keep that streak going! You can also find words not part of the official puzzle for extra Coins. Once you find a word that is either not a word or not in a puzzle, your bonus streak is snapped. So if you can, try to consistently find words to keep your string going. If you need hints, spend Coins to get hints. Later facilities give you a much-needed boost if you get stuck. Do everything you can to clear each puzzle. Some puzzles may have a Challenge Word for you to find outside of the main puzzle. Find that Challenge Word to earn a Coin bonus! The level ends once all official puzzle words have been found.

The daily puzzles have you trying to find words at specific point. When you see a daily puzzle, you will see an owl located somewhere on the puzzle. That owl, named Mr. Hoot, rests on one of the words you must find. You earn a Star for each word you find with Mr. Hoot on it. You can still solve the puzzle by finding words that Mr. Hoot isn't resting on. Only thing is, you will not earn as many Stars for words you find that does not have the owl resting on a certain word. Collecting more Stars helps you fill out your Scrapbook. Find all of the words to clear the Daily Puzzle!

I mentioned going on streaks earlier. When there are Bloom Rush tournaments, you earn Golden Blooms for getting on these streaks of finding words. Be sure to enjoy these Tournaments when you get a chance to compete in them!

A Word of Warning.

If you do not remove ads, then after you clear each puzzle, you will advance to the next stage immediately following an advertisement. Give yourself 3-5 seconds to play after the next stage loads so that any ads don't obstruct your time playing the next level. Sometimes, the game even gives you notifications in the game that hinder your progress when you start a new level or after you fail multiple times to register a correct word. So give yourself some time before taking on the next puzzle.

Let me share my Final Thoughts on this game now.

CrossWord Jam: Final Thoughts

With its beautiful graphics and relaxing atmosphere, CrossWord Jam is a joy to play. It offers the appeal of word hunting while providing a welcoming atmosphere. I mostly have two gripes with this game from my play experience. First off, the game runs a little slow on my tablet PC. Sometimes, the game tends to lag as I try to swipe letters. I might easily try to spell a word but end up not having it count because of the game lag. Second, the game has advertisements and notices that come up at inopportune times, mostly in starting a new level or if I gather enough Bonus words. The game does not seem overly challenging. While not an easy game, it will surely test your word power. It also can be addicting in the sense of chaining together multiple words in a row. This is a lovely game in many aspects. Its efficiency, however, holds it back from being great.

WordScapes Search

John B. Marine | 6/27/2020 12:26:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
If you love searching for words in a puzzle, PeopleFun Games has come up with "WordScapes Search." All the words to complete the puzzle are there- you just got to find them! If you accept this challenge, get ready for a word searching experience only PeopleFun Games can provide!

A Note About Mobile Games...

This is a review of a game as it is as of June 27, 2020. This game may have changed over time based on this initial blog post. This game was reviewed on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

Wordscapes Search

"WordScapes Search" has you completing word search puzzles to find all of the words. You are given a hint as to what the puzzle is about, and it is then up to you to find all of the words in the puzzle.
Soothing music and lovely graphics compliment your word-finding experience in this game. From my experiences, this game runs a little slow on my tablet PC, but not enough to be an annoyance.

I am currently on Level 27 at the time of creating this review. "WordScapes Search" is a free game but offers in-app purchases.

Game Play.

The goal of "WordScapes Search" is to find all of the words within the puzzle. The hint for each puzzle gives you an idea of what words to look for. All of the available words are within the puzzle. All you need to do is find them! One thing to note is that words can read either normally or in reverse. So for example, if one of the words in a puzzle is "CHOCOLATE," it may read as "ETALOCOHC" when you find it. Find each word by starting with the first letter and swiping to the end of the word. Using my "CHOCOLATE" example, you find the "C" and then swipe until you get to the "E" in "CHOCOLATE" to find a word. If you find other words in a puzzle outside of the ones you need to find, you will earn bonus points. Enough of the bonus words you find will give you a coin bonus. Not every proper word in a puzzle is available. In fact, you may be challenged to find certain words in a puzzle that give you maybe one letter followed by a bunch of hidden letters. If you find these words, you will earn a small Coin bonus while also successfully clearing the puzzle.

If you need assistance, there are some options you can use to get hints. Spend your Coins to get yourself out of a word-searching jam if you need assistance. The most basic facility gives you a hint as to where a certain word is in the puzzle. A later option gets rid of unnecessary letters in a puzzle. Take advantage of these different options if you need help. There is no time limit for each puzzle, and you will not face penalties for not finding an incorrect word. If you need more Coins or more resources, spend some of your real money or credits to purchase bundle packs of Coins and various hints.

A level is complete when all of the official words in a puzzle have been found. Bonuses are earned for finding additional words. So search for words as best as you can!

I'll offer my thoughts now in the next section.

Wordscapes Search: Final Thoughts

"WordScapes Search" offers a beautiful word searching experience. This game does not seem frustrating in trying to find each word. I think I have had better luck playing the game without it crashing over certain ads or changes in level. The music and graphics are great. If anything, the game can run a bit slow. Otherwise, this is quite an enjoyable game.

Word Stacks

John B. Marine | 6/27/2020 12:18:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
Word Stacks by PeopleFun Games is about finding words among a stack of letters. So get ready to keep a close eye on a stack of blocks while trying to clear each puzzle. Can you find all the words in a stack of blocks? I will be here to blog my review of "Word Stacks" by PeopleFun Games. If this game interests you, my thoughts on this title are coming your way right now!

A Note About Mobile Games...

This is a review of a game as it is as of June 27, 2020. This game may have changed over time based on this initial blog post. This game was reviewed on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

A Note About This Post...

The previous post was deleted as I had the wrong name of the game. This post is a revision of a previous post but with the correct name of the game listed. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Word Stacks

Welcome to Word Stacks!

Each segment of the game is in a Chapter. Each chapter contains 10 levels. You are given a clue as to what the puzzle is about. What you see afterwards is for you to find all of the individual words to solve the puzzle and advance to the next level. All the while, the game offers soothing and beautiful visuals and music to calm your mind. Words found are all horizontal or vertical. They can read normally or in reverse. You must find the word based on the first letter to the final one. The words do not have to be all the way down. For instance, you may see the word "RAIN" bordered by other letters. So look carefully for each word. And remember- the words may be in an inverted order. So to find "RAIN," it may appear in the puzzle as "NIAR." You can gain extra coins if you find enough of certain words that do not pertain to the puzzle. You earn bonus Coins and Themes by progressing through the game. Clearing Chapters give you a Coin bonus.

You can play through the game's many puzzles and even take part in Daily Puzzles. The Daily Puzzles operate a bit different from the in-game puzzles. Unlike in the game, the daily puzzles do not have any hints as to what the puzzle is about. An interesting approach to the Daily Puzzles is that as you find certain words, you may get hints on what words are available based on what letters you swipe. If you note a letter is highlighted from letters you swipe across, it means you are approaching on finding a certain word that is part of the puzzle. All you have to do then is find out what letters you need to fill out the puzzle!

Once you reach around Level 50, you can take part in Tournaments. Try to position yourself as high as possible! Your Tournament success depends on your ability to find extra words as well as completing as many Levels as you can.

Word Stacks is free to play, but in-app purchases can be made. You can use real money to get yourself more Coins or even get Bundles to help you get through the game. Completionists... this game has over 500 Chapters and 5000 levels! I was on Chapter 5, Level 56 in the creation of this blog post.

Advice.

Here are a few things I learned playing "Word Stacks"...

• If you find yourself stuck and want to restart, you can try to go back to a previous puzzle and then go back to the one you were currently working on. The one you haven't yet cleared will return to its regular form before you exited. Then too, it does not seem possible to be stuck or get yourself in a situation that is tough to get out of clearing letters. You can not gain any extra Coins from a level you completed. So don't even think about trying to grind for Coins.

• Just like in my review of "WordScapes," take your time and don't try to be perfect. There is no time limit to clear each puzzle, and you don't need to rush through the game. You also have unlimited chances to find every word. You will not face any penalties for not finding words or for taking too long to find any words. You can also leave the game at any time and return to a puzzle you haven't yet finished. Only worry about trying to complete things quickly if you are in some Tournament and in a neck-to-neck race against somebody.

Final Thoughts to come. Next section tells you all you need to know from me.

Word Stacks: Final Thoughts

"Word Stacks" is somewhat tougher than the "WordScapes" game I reviewed previously, but this game does deliver a nice challenge. You really have to look hard and try to search for words spelled either normal or reverse. You even think you found a word... only to have to clear a certain letter or more to complete the puzzle. It still will test your mind to a great degree. Sometimes, though, it can be frustrating trying to find certain words. Frustration does NOT equal fun. This game can still be a fine challenge. Beautiful graphics and music compliment the game a lot. The game can have some of the same advertisement issues, but I did not find these to be as annoying as in "WordScapes." So you may be recommended to pay to remove ads to improve the performance of the game. If you want a good word-finding challenge, give "Word Scapes" a try.

Wordscapes

John B. Marine | 6/19/2020 11:26:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
Wordscapes is a mobile game that challenges you to find as many words as possible given a set of letters. It is a casual-type game I discovered seeing a Google ad once. It is an interesting crossword puzzle game for Android and iOS mobile platforms. I will review this game after playing it for a few days.

A Note About Mobile Games...

This is a review of a game as it is as of June 19, 2020. This game may have changed over time based on this initial blog post.

Wordscapes

Wordscapes is a casual puzzle game by PeopleFun where you try to find as many words as you can using the given letters to you. A crossword puzzle helps you in trying to find as many words as possible from the set given to you. The game is met with a smooth ambient soundtrack along with lovely sound effects. It provides a calming atmosphere. You start off with a simple puzzle with three letters. As you progress through the game, you have word challenges involving four letters, five letters, six letters, and probably more than that. The game will give you certain perks you can take advantage of to help you find the hidden words. Try to find all of the words in the puzzle to advance to the next Level! You can make your own profile as well as join a team. You can even compete in Tournaments, both of the single and team variety. Wordscapes is a free game for Android and iOS, but in-app purchases can be made.

The way you input letters is to swipe across the given letters to find as many words as possible. For example, if you are given the letters P-S-D-A-E, you can swipe a set of five letters to spell S-P-A-D-E. Then you find other words like "S-P-A," "P-A-D," and more. Each entered word is has at least three letters to them. You can only use each letter once. If you find extra words that are not part of the puzzle, you gain a Coin bonus. The level is complete when you find all of the words for one level. Your Brilliance is enhanced for each puzzle you complete.

If you want to complete this game you'll be playing it for quite a while. This game apparently has over 6,000 levels! At the time of me posting this blog entry, I am currently on Level 129. Be prepared to commit if you somehow want to be a completionist of this game. You can also take part in daily puzzles that can earn you some sweet rewards.

Advice.

Here is some advice if you plan on getting this game.

• Various facilities are available to you to help you find each of the words. Each of these items require you to have a certain amount of Coins to use. If you lack Coins to use certain helpers, you can spend your real money to purchase extra Coins. The simplest helper is the Hint, which costs 100 and reveals one letter to help you solve the puzzle.

• Some puzzles have hidden words that are not part of the puzzle. Find these hidden words to gain a Coin bonuses when you complete the puzzle.

• TAKE YOUR TIME! There is no time limit to complete each puzzle. You can return to any puzzle you haven't yet completed. Also, you could exit the game and come back any time to complete the puzzle you were previously working on. Don't try to do some kind of speedrun, and don't feel pressured into trying to speedrun "Wordscapes."

• DON'T CHASE PERFECTION! You are not penalized for missing words or for inputting the wrong words. So don't feel you have a certain number of tries to complete each puzzle. You may sometimes try any number of letter combinations to hopefully solve the puzzle.

What are my thoughts on this game? Find out in the next section!

Wordscapes: Final Thoughts

Wordpress will really challenge you to find as many words as possible with the given puzzles. You sometimes will have to really think about what words you may be missing. The crossword puzzle style helps in making you think about what word(s) you might be missing. It is a challenging game, but not really difficult or impossible.

My only gripe with Wordscapes is the advertisements. Some of the ads can be rather long- some lasting between 1-2 minutes! You can, though, speed up some of the longer ads so you can get back to the game by either fast forwarding or clicking on the "X" on the top right of your device's touchscreen. This is otherwise a game that will challenge your word knowledge. You can eliminate the ads for a fee. That, and the game sometimes crashes on me or restarts after viewing an ad.

I otherwise would recommend this game for those wanting to challenge their word power.

Soul Intentions

John B. Marine | 6/04/2015 09:43:00 AM | | | | | Be the first to comment!
The sole intention of @maryjorapini's Soul Intentions is to offer advice and insight to make life better. The advice provided is by psychotherapist Mary Jo Rapini is presented in this app for Android and iOS. Those in Houston/Galveston may know of Mary Jo Rapini as she regularly offers insight and advice on FOX 26 Morning News and FOX 26 Morning News Extra. There was once a segment featuring her weekly called "Mind, Body, and Soul with Mary Jo." Others may know her as famously having a near-death experience that made national news back in 2010 or so. Either way, Mary Jo Rapini's advice is offered in this mobile app. The majority of her expertise mostly is with relationship issues, but she also provides her expertise with life issues.

Soul Intentions by Mary Jo Rapini
^ from: play.google.com (links to app (for Android)) - Soul Intentions by Mary Jo Rapini offers advice and insight on a variety of issues on the go.

Soul Intentions features posts from Mary Jo Rapini's website. If you fancy the advice given, you can rate the different topics offered to as many as five stars. You can check off certain posts as Favorites for you to look back on. Posts can be filtered ranging from date to rating. That way, you can follow some of the given advice on a level you are comfortable with. You can even share the advice she offers among your friends on Facebook and Twitter. Also included with the app is a brief bio on Mary Jo.

This is an app all about offering solid advice from someone as professional and as passionate as Mary Jo Rapini. Most respectful of all is the real "pay it forward" train of thought in expressing these views and offering this advice. As someone who respects Mary Jo Rapini and the advice she provides, I say that this is a must-have app for anyone seeking positivity and guidance. The only reason why you shouldn't get this app is if your mobile device is incompatible with it. Give the Soul Intentions app a try, and I think you'll be impressed with the insight and advice provided by Mary Jo Rapini.

In a little run I had preparing this post, the program did crash on my Android tablet, but I'm sure it probably was just a small glitch that I think would probably could be improved in the future. No program or app is ever 100% perfect technically, though. This is still a fairly rock solid app.

There is an app for positivity! @Goodspire is an app featuring a handful of positive stories and messages to help shine positivity in today's negative world. Created by Jarrell Liner, this app offers positivity for your life and for others. What you get with the Goodspire app is a handful of stories in certain categories- such as daily struggles, financial health, and more. It is safe to say that an app like this covers all the bases and almost always is capable of delivering a home run (or even a Grand Slam).

Goodspire

To be honest, I rarely use the app. However, I do get notices every morning saying my inspiration is ready. At least you know that you will have at least some sort of positive influence and inspiration every morning. Why so? Because good inspiration and motivation never takes a day off. What this app provides is quality material scattered across cyberspace and available to you on your mobile device. If you're feeling down or want some positivity, there is no reason to not feel convinced at what Goodspire offers. Just the simple fact you get positive advice and positive material is enough to even care about what Goodspire has to offer.

Fist of Awesome

John B. Marine | 3/16/2015 09:33:00 PM | | | 1 Comment so far
"FIST!" Animal rights activists may not approve of "Fist of Awesome" by I Fight Bears. Then again, they may even boycott a game design studio with a name of "I Fight Bears." But for us gamers... who gives a flying crap? "Fist of Awesome" is made by Nicoll Hunt of the British development studio "I Fight Bears" and features a lumberjack trying to rescue humanity from bears, who have become the dominant species in the world. This lumberjack has a golden ally- one big fist! Can this lumberjack save humanity? You're going to need to utilize these skills and more to take down these evil forces. This blog post is my own sort of review based on my playing of "Fist of Awesome."

NOTE: My review and thoughts are based on my experience playing the OUYA version of "Fist of Awesome."

--- Fist of Awesome ---

Fist of Awesome
^ from: play.google.com (click this link to buy on Google Play) - "Ever wanted to punch a bear in the mouth?".

"Fist of Awesome" is a brawler game where most of your enemies are wild animals and (of course) bears. You play as Tim Burr, a lumberjack who was enjoying time with his family until something unusual happened. The forest gets set on file, Tim's house is on fire, and his family is missing. All the while, Tom has an epic living fist ready to knock out those evil creatures and retake control of humanity. That epic left hand will be put to good use and will be a great weapon in the quest to rescue humanity. Standing in your way of saving humanity are lots of grizzly beasts with and without clothes.

This game consists of two modes- Legend and Arena. Legend has you running the main storyline of "Fist of Awesome," and Arena is a mode dedicated more towards deathmatch and handling waves of enemies. Most of my experience playing this game is mostly through Legend mode. Progress in these modes earn you experience good for upgrading characters. Upgrading characters allows you to enhance the main attributes while playing the game. The attributes you can configure include the following:

• Health: increases more health so you can last longer.
• Attack: increases attack power when performing regular attacks.
• Speed: increases speed so you can execute attacks quicker and move faster.
• Special: increases the power of Special attacks.

The game involves some time travel, and you will be venturing through some times to take down the bears and other animals that have taken over as dominant species. Upgrade your abilities to keep pace against the beasts. You will be taking on these beasts in vastly pixelated glory. You even get to enjoy some cool sounds and even hearing "FIST!" when that epic fist is used. The game uses an Auto-Save system. So when you're defeated, you start off at the last scene you were working on before being knocked out. In fact, when I started working on this blog post again, I was NEVER defeated in the Normal difficulty setting until I started being defeated for the first time in any level.

A few things to be wary of in this game... there is a little bit of bad language with "damn" and "hell" being used, but this game isn't entirely some mature-level game. I'll put it like this- it is less mature than when I reviewed "Fist Puncher."

--- Fist of Awesome: Final Thoughts and Review ---

"Fist of Awesome" has a great feel to it as a brawler. However, I think the pace of the game is rather slow compared to the classic brawler games that inspired this game. People who may see this game for the first time ever may easily say this is an ugly-looking game because of its pixelated graphics. PLEASE do not fall into the trap of thinking this game isn't worth playing just because of its graphics! If you look beyond the pixelated look of this game, you'll see this game performs just as brilliantly as any other brawler game. And it isn't as if this game is too ugly looking to be worth playing. Cool music is in this game. "Fist of Awesome" has some great humor, and some of the jokes are pretty funny.

The only things I'd change about this game is a little more variety in enemy types as well as more methods to dole out punishment. I would add more abilities, maybe some items and weapons to clear out waves of enemies faster, and most importantly, find ways to make the game feel faster. Those are things I'd look at if "Fist of Awesome" were to have a sequel or a complete upgrade. Something indifferent would be the ability to have different characters to use and maybe even some multiplayer action. After all, beat-em-ups are more fun and easier when you bring along a buddy or more.

Pixel Staff

John B. Marine | 3/09/2015 05:11:00 PM | | | 3 Comments so far
Pixel Staff continues the story of Pixel Sword. Homeworld Arts offers a new experience within their gaming realm with this title that can be played in Flash, Android, iOS, or the OUYA. You play as a mage this time in a different world. Can you rid the world of evil that threatens it? Pick up your magic staff and prepare to do battle in a brand new and different adventure! Time to go to work again- it's another post for "John's Blog Space!"

--- Pixel Staff ---

Aside from what "Pixel Sword" brought, you are now taking on a different challenge in "Pixel Staff." Rather than levels, you are involved in one large stage with many different rooms and outdoor sections to explore. You will do battle against a horde of new enemies as well as the ability to upgrade your abilities and unlock some perks and powers. You fire projectiles against enemies by using your magic staff. As you go around the vast world in Pixel Staff, you can find some treasure chests with upgrades to your health and attack power. Battling major enemies will grant you extra abilities should you defeat them. Should you defeat the final boss of this game, you will have saved the world from a curse. Not that I know many gaming terms, but this is a true "Metroidvania" type game.

Your character is a mage bestowed with a magical staff. His abilities and powers can be upgraded by finding various treasure and beating major enemies. Among other things is the ability to jump higher. The staff can be upgraded to provide more powerful attacks. You can even find heart pieces to boost your health further, just like in the Zelda games.

Review of "Pixel Staff".

Don't expect too many new things if you are familiar with Pixel Sword and have played it. I don't mean this in any negative context; it is just that if you enjoyed "Pixel Sword," you'll love "Pixel Staff" a good bit more. The action is more free and loose than in "Pixel Sword." Some of the different enemies offer a different touch as opposed to in "Pixel Sword." Your strategies will change since you are dealing with a different kind of hero with a different style of offense. Both "Pixel Sword" and "Pixel Staff" were not meant to be overly difficult. So in this game, the only thing really difficult is in trying not to get lost or trying to do too much back tracking. Here is a game basically anyone can enjoy- and you probably will if you're a fan of classic action games like this one. The game can be completed at or just over half an hour. The main song that plays throughout the game is great, but I like Pixel Sword's song a little more.

So this game will keep you busy for its length. If I were to offer a refresh of this title, I'd maybe expand the wizard's attack abilities to include using the staff as a melee weapon if in a close-quarters battle. This would even include making the mage be able to crouch and perform low attacks. I would also include the ability to fire upwards. If I wanted to expand the game, I'd include another world or another story to add to the experience after clearing the main game.

Video Preview.

Here is the game I've discussed in video form:

^ "Pixel Staff - Indie Game - Gameplay"

Want to play this game? Here are the ways you can enjoy Pixel Staff:

Pixel Staff (Flash)
Pixel Staff (Android)
Pixel Staff (iOS)
Pixel Staff (OUYA)

That's all from me on this game. Hope you enjoyed this review. To learn more about HomeWorld Arts, visit homeworldarts.com/.

--- Looking Ahead? (Bonus Section!) ---

Part of me says if HomeWorld Arts were to expand on both Pixel Sword and Pixel Staff, what would a third installment of this series include? The two games are similar in structure to where I wonder what a third game would be like. There are a few possibilities:

• Combine Elements of Both?
I think it can be possible to have one protagonist be able to wield a sword while also being able to use magic. Do you have one character serve as having both the heroes of Pixel Sword and Pixel Staff, or do you have one character be able to be diverse on offense? Think of Link being able to engage in swordplay as well as be able to fire arrows. You'd have both a melee fighter that also has some long range ability. So the sword fighter from Pixel Sword could also engage in projectile attacks for long-range battle. You have to love the idea of a versatile protagonist for a game and be able to utilize that versatility effectively.

• Switching Characters?
Not that I've played the full game, but I remember playing the demo to a PC game called Realms of Chaos from Apogee/3D Realms. You could freely change from the male fighter to a female mage. Using their respective abilities are crucial in getting through that game. It is possible you could go with the sword fighter but then use the upgraded abilities of the mage. Or to look at another set of games, you can think about the Donkey Kong games on the SNES, where you could change between characters once you have a little party going. You may even think about games like "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" and after when you have Sonic and Tails working together for if you have both of them together. So you can have yourself a possible RPG party to help take care of business.

• Possible Multiplayer?
Part of me wants to imagine some multiplayer action. Can you imagine one fighter and one mage taking on the enemies? Two fighters? Two mages? It is also possible to maybe have one-on-one battle. Since I talk about the OUYA so much, and since the OUYA can handle up to four players, is it possible for the Pixel Sword/Staff universe be conducive to any sort of four-player multiplayer?

These are just things to wonder if you like Pixel Sword/Staff.
