Car Style - The BMW X6

(UPDATED: March 14, 2012)

In 2007, BMW came along with something radically different for the automotive world when they came along with the BMW X6 concept. Many people in the United States like big cars. A lot of them are mostly SUVs, just that they aren't CALLED SUVs. To me, the BMW X6 is MY idea of a big car. Not machines like the Mazda CX-7 and CX-9 (though I love them). Not the Chevrolet Traverse (though I do think it's a beautiful machine). The BMW X6 actually LOOKS like a car with running boards and good ground clearance. Think of it as a civilized Dakar Rally "car."

NOTE: For all intents and purposes, I'll mostly refer to the 2008 BMW X6 xDrive50i for this segment.

THIS is the BMW X6:

If Chris Bangle had a Greatest Hits collection featuring designs of his, the BMW X6 would be on that list. People have called this machine ugly. I've actually praised the BMW X6 because this is something interesting and (at least to me) very interesting. It isn't like this car is the second coming of the Pontiac Asstek... I mean, Aztek. Yes, the X6 is in the SUV designation, but I think of it as a big car rather than an SUV. This SUV does have PLENTY of sport. It isn't like a boxy, top-heavy machine like a Ford Excursion or any Land Rover. I applaud BMW for trying something out like this.

From a style perspective, take a look at the lines put forth on the BMW X6. If anything, the headlights and kidney grills are traditional BMW. There's a little grill under the front grill. It all looks much better than the latest Honda CR-V. The X6 exudes character and aggression without being overaggressive. This is a different kind of machine. It's not a car, not really an SUV. What it is, however, is a best-of-both-worlds approach that doesn't compromise too much either way. The side profile seems a bit like a hatchback. It's very sporty and carlike even with the sloping rear. The rear of the car is very stylish. You almost can't really tell if it's a car or not from the back.

When looking inside the BMW X6, again... is it a car or not? The inside is beautifully appointed with a stylish interior. Almost like you're not sure if you're in an X6 or their M6. BMW style all comes together beautifully inside and out.

Whether you love the X6 or not, you have to admit that it perhaps the best big car ever designed. It's a car that's also an SUV, but doesn't compromise much either way. It's a car with running boards. It can easily be a Dakar car for the road. People are going to hate on its looks, but it's a different kind of car. I've seen a few on the road before, not to mention getting inside it at the Houston Auto Show once. Very unique car. Call it ugly, call it atrocious, but it's definitely different.
