Telescopes

John B. Marine | 11/15/2019 09:34:00 AM | | Be the first to comment!
In 2015, I blogged about the Hubble Space Telescope. I was approached by someone online who wrote an article about the best telescopes for 2020. So I decided to post a brief blog entry discussing telescopes. This blog post is a not-as-detailed look at telescopes and why you should invest in one if you have such interests in astronomy. For someone whose online work is inspired by stars and space, I am pleased to offer a blog post regarding telescopes. Welcome to "John's Blog Space!"

Telescopes

Time to see the universe in a special way. Telescope talk!

telescope
^ from: costco.com - You can see only so much of what the universe has to offer. Therefore, a telescope can help you see more of our universe.

Why would you want a telescope? Well, so many fascinating things about our universe can't see seen with the naked eye. So we need a telescope to gauge some of the amazing things about space. A telescope allows you to see in space what the naked eye can not. You can see some of the many things in space you can only dream of seeing. There are some instances when I've used a telescope to see things like shooting stars or orbiting space satellites.

As someone who enjoys Earth Science as well as Astronomy, it can be a fine educational investment to purchase and use a telescope to see what our universe has to offer. Telescopes can range in price from about $99 USD to over $20K USD depending on how powerful of a telescope you'd like to have. This article online gives you a brief overview of what to look for in a telescope: A Beginner's Guide to Telescopes. Surely invest in a telescope if you have abounding admiration for wondering what our universe has to offer.

It can be a very fun experience to want to gaze into our universe and see what we normally wouldn't see through the naked eye. So get yourself a telescope and see what is REALLY out there!

Stars of Pleiades

John B. Marine | 10/04/2015 10:00:00 PM | | | Be the first to comment!
The Stars of Pleiades (also called the Seven Sisters) are seven bright stars. This star cluster is also called Messier 45 (or M45). You can find these stars in the Taurus constellation. They are 400 light years from Earth. Even though the Stars of Pleiades are known as the Seven Sisters, only six of the stars are visible to the human eye. I learned a lot in my research of this topic. The Pleiades are the seven daughters of Atlas in Greek Mythology who were turned into stars. The Stars of Pleiades consist of Atlas, Pleione, Alcyone/Halcyone, Merope, Maia, Electra/Eleckra, Celaena, Taygete/Taygeta, and Asterope/Sterope. Atlas and Pleione in Greek Mythology are not Pleiades.

Here is a picture I found online through a Google Images search to show you the Stars of Pleiades:

Stars of Pleiades
^ from: blog.al.com - The Stars of Pleiades.

And here is some video insight on the Stars of Pleiades:

^ "Seven Sisters or Pleiades (M45) - Deep Sky Videos"

Stars of Pleiades: Subaru.

If you are a fan of Subaru, you know their logo is based on these seven stars. Those seven stars of Subaru bear the Stars of Pleiades. If you know your Subaru cars, then you may know Subaru made one car called the Alcyone, which is also called the SVX. Here is a picture of that car bearing the same name as one of the Stars of Pleiades:

Subaru Alcyone SVX
^ from: www.tradebit.com - This is the Subaru Alcyone (also called the SVX). The Alcyone is named one of the Stars of Pleiades.

And here is some video insight on this car:

^ "MotorWeek | Retro Review: '91 Subaru SVX"

You probably have a hint about the Stars of Pleiades if you played Gran Turismo games and competed in the "Stars of Pleiades" events. If you like racing games (including the Gran Turismo series), I invite you to visit my racing/driving game blog called "John's Race Space."

So now you know about the Stars of Pleiades... and also gained some factoids about Subaru.

This blog post is over. I actually wanted to blog about the Stars of Pleiades for the longest. The post is now complete. Be sure to Subscribe and Follow my blog(s) to keep up with the latest posts. I appreciate you visiting my blog(s). Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.

Hubble Space Telescope

John B. Marine | 4/24/2015 02:42:00 AM | | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: November 15, 2019)

On April 24, 1990; the #HubbleSpaceTelescope went into orbit. Named after astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble, it has provided many beautiful images of space throughout the entirety of its time in orbit. It has literally been our eyes to the universe. So much of what we can see in our universe was made possible thanks in part to the Hubble Space Telescope. This post is more a digest rather than something detailed or something made for a school/college essay or report. I would want this to be a detailed post, but I decided to make this more a semi-casual post that still shares my overall respect for what the Hubble Space Telescope has provided.

This long video provides the greatest insight on this great telescope and just what it means to learning more about our universe:

^ "The Hubble Space Telescope: The Most Important Instrument Ever Built"

I also want to share this video, featuring some of the many beautiful images the Hubble Space Telescope was able to capture. This video only goes up to 2012, but it is worth watching if you want to see some amazing cosmic displays:

^ Hubble Space Telescope - The Best Images From Over Two Decades In Orbit

All I can say is that the Hubble Space Telescope is surely one of human's greatest creations. It has literally been our eye to the rest of the universe... not to mention an "eye" that has had to be repaired a time or two to enhance its abilities and what all it is able to capture about our universe.

If you want to take something away from this post, the main concept to grasp is that we live in a fascinating and awesome universe. We wouldn't know how much so had it not been for creations like the Hubble Space Telescope. Anything that helps open our eyes to the universe we live in is surely special and important. The Hubble Space Telescope has expanded our knowledge of our universe. So often these days, we learn more and more about our universe with the Hubble Space Telescope and through the many different advancements in research and development by various space exploration agencies and missions. Most of what we are able to see and observe is all mostly thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope.

Resources.

As a special bit of thanks to you reading my blog post on the Hubble Space Telescope, I have provided some extra links as well as some little offers in case you're interested.

I may add more material to this Resources section in the future, but that is all for now.

This has been a semi-casual post. Since the original date of this blog post is on April 24, 2015, let me say this:

Happy Silver (25th) birthday, Hubble Space Telescope!

I'll blog about almost anything, and I'm sure/hopeful you'll probably like it. I hope you appreciated my brief blog post taking a look at the Hubble Space Telescope. Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.

Auroras

John B. Marine | 7/24/2013 02:33:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
Auroras are beautiful arrays of light at night. They are usually seen in far northern or far southern latitudes. What makes them so beautiful to watch just relates to they look like curtains waving around in the sky and in many beautiful colors. Imagine colorful curtains in the night sky while the stars sparkle in the sky. It's just a beautiful sight. However, as beautiful as they can be, I hear they can be damaging to electronics because of the electromagnetic energy auroras provide. As far as seeing auroras are concerned, you may or may not have to be in far latitudes to see one. In fact, someone in Colorado reportedly saw an aurora in the sky at night.

In northern latitudes, the Aurora Borealis (also called the "Northern Lights") can be seen. In southern latitudes, the Aurora Australis (also called the "Southern Lights") can be seen. Those of you video gamers may have seen an aurora if you play Cammy's stage in "Super Street Fighter II" or "Super Street Fighter II Turbo." I have found these videos to show you the beauty of auroras. Here is an educational piece regarding auroras (click on the link to view in YouTube):

^ The Auroras | It's Okay to be Smart | PBS Digital Studios

Fascinating, huh?

My blog covers a variety of topics. It is a bit funny that my blogs follow the theme of Stars and Space, but I've made only so many blog topics actually regarding stars and space. You can see all of my latest "Stars and Space" posts by clicking this link in case you are interested: "Stars and Space" posts on John's Blog Space.

What do you think about auroras? This was just a semi-casual post I decided to post here. I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for reading!

Stargazing

John B. Marine | 9/15/2011 11:58:00 AM | | | Be the first to comment!
It can be very beautiful to see stars (and other celestial bodies) in the night sky. A clear night's sky supplements its own natural show for all to see. Many people can better see what all the universe has to offer when not around city lights. Those in rural areas, places without lots of city lights, and even those in far northern/southern latitudes and elevations are usually able to see what all the universe has to offer. Here is a random picture I found online to help set the mood for this blog post:

stargazing
^ from: www.starscapes.com (best I could find; this or nothing) - The night sky is full of many wonders and mysteries. What will YOUR stargazing experience have in store for you when you look up in a clear night's sky?

As anyone who visits John's Blog Space knows, I have always had such deep fondness for nighttime. I can remember in 1994 (I was a 5th Grader then) when I was part of a field trip at a camp called Camp Olympia. The first night of my four-day field trip, I looked up into the sky and saw MANY stars at night. The sight was so beautiful. Unfortunately, that star show didn't last long because it would rain hard later that night with rain persisting for the second day. Anyhow, seeing many stars in the sky makes you wonder what all is out there than what we normally see at night. Keep in mind that I live in a big city- Houston. At most, I can see anywhere between 30 to 50 stars in the sky on a clear night in the city. For the rare times I have been away from lots of city lights, MANY more stars are visible in the sky at night. It is really a phenomenal sight to see so many stars in the sky at night. Many more can be seen if you go to an observatory or have a telescope.

Maybe the most interesting thing I've ever seen in the night sky was a shooting star. I actually remembered seeing a shooting star one morning when I was a little boy. I have never really noted solar eclipses or lunar eclipses before. If I actually lived in locations where I could see auroras, I'd love to see how they would look in person. I had actually intended on posting a blog about auroras. I may save that for the near future.

Do you all enjoy looking up at the sky at night? Are there certain things you would love to see in the night sky when looking up at the stars? Are there certain locations for you that are great for looking up at the night sky? Feel free to comment. Thank you for reading!

The Southern Cross (or Crux Australis)

John B. Marine | 12/02/2010 06:25:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: May 31, 2012)

The Southern Cross (or Crux Australis) is the most distinctive constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. It is something I began to notice when I started seeing the flags of certain nations in Oceania and the South Pacific. It is the star arrangement you see on the flags of certain nations. The majority of nations are mostly Oceania and South Pacific nations. However, I learned the Southern Cross can also be found in one specific nation NOT in the South Pacific. More on that later in this blog post. This blog entry is a piece on the Southern Cross.

LATEST UPDATE(S)/REVISION(S):

MAY 31 2012 - added a few simple edits

--- Stars of the Southern Cross ---

The Southern Cross consists of five stars. This picture below shows you the Southern Cross from space, and the info below introduces you to the five stars which comprise the Southern Cross:

Southern Cross
^ from: oneminuteastronomer.com (and this was the best I could find) - the Southern Cross (or Crux Australis) from space.

Stars of the Southern Cross.

•Gamma Crux (86 lightyears)
•Delta Crux (256 lightyears)
•Beta Cruz (or Mimosa; 424 lightyears)
•Epsilon Crux (57 lightyears)
•Alpha 1 Crux (or Acrux; 368 lightyears)

From what I've read, the Southern Cross is important in navigation by sea. You must be south of 30° latittude (if you live in or are located in the Northern Hemisphere) to observe the rather small Crux constellation. Acrux is the brightest star of the Southern Cross. Therefore, you get an indication as to where south is by following the stars of the Southern Cross.

Nations Whose Flags Feature the Southern Cross.

Various South Pacific nations (including one nation that I didn't know had the Southern Cross) have flags with the Southern Cross showcased on them. The most popular country you'll see the Southern Cross on is on the flag of Australia. Other nations with the Southern Cross as part of their flag include (but are not limited to): Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Samoa. Now remember I mentioned that there was one non-South Pacific nation bearing the Southern Cross on its flag? What is that one nation's flag that I didn't know had the Southern Cross? Ever heard of... Brazil? If you look at Brazil's flag, look down from the "P" in "Ordem e Progresso." You will see the Southern Cross marked on the Brazilian flag if you look down from the "P" in "Ordem e Progresso." You should be able to spot the familiar Southern Cross there. I did NOT know about any of this until I saw this on Wikipedia and actually studied Brazil's flag.

Hope you got to enjoy this blog post regarding the Southern Cross (or Crux Australis). I am just "Spring Cleaning" my unfinished blog posts of 2010, and this is one of them. Hope your enjoyed it! Read more about the Southern Cross by reading Crux on Wikipedia.

Signs of the Zodiac

John B. Marine | 12/02/2010 05:49:00 PM | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: April 17, 2014)

You know the signs, but what about the constellations? This blog entry features the constellations and the stars that comprise all 12 zodiac signs. I must regret to inform you that this is an old blog entry supposed to be about how certain zodiac signs look in space. Because of copyright concerns, I have now just made this a blog post about famous people based on their zodiac symbol. Rather than post pictures of stars in space (which was the primary intent), I will instead link you to Wikipedia so you can learn more about each zodiac sign and each constellation. I am deeply sorry to all of you.

Click on each Wikipedia link to learn more about each sign of the zodiac and of all the stars that comprise each constellation in space.

--- The NEW Zodiac? (added: January 14, 2011) ---

According to the fact that Earth's alignment has changed, so have the dates of the zodiac. Here are the new dates:

New Zodiac Dates...
Capricorn: Jan. 21 to Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 17 to Mar. 11
Pisces: Mar. 12 to April 18
Aries: Apr. 19 to May 13
Taurus: May 14 to June 21
Gemini: June 22 to July 20
Cancer: July 20 to Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 11 to Sep. 16
Virgo: Sep. 17 to Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 31 to Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 24 to Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 to Jan. 20

Ophiuchus: November 30 to December 17

I guess I'm a Sagittarian now. :( I had to change up the dates because you can't be two signs of the zodiac at the same time. I also had to look up the new date for the Ophiuchus sign. Some sites I read had certain end days as the start of a new one. In other words, the last day for Sagittarians is January 20... which is also the first day for the •new• Capricorn date with this new date alignment.

What do you make of all of this?

I'm still not going to adjust the names of famous zodiac people just because of this.

Now you know a few famous people born within those times of the zodiac. Again, I'm sorry that I couldn't post any pictures of each zodiac sign in space, which was the primary intent of this blog post. I still hope you enjoyed reading this as well as learning aobut the different characteristics and such of each zodiac sign. I personally don't believe in horoscopes. Crap happens each day.

Most of the information about the characteristics of each zodiac sign are based on stuff I have read on Zodiac Signs. If you haven't read earlier, I am trying to get rid of as many of my incomplete 2010 blog posts to get ready for 2011, and this is one of them. Hope you like this one!

Space Center Houston

John B. Marine | 9/12/2010 04:05:00 AM | | | | | Be the first to comment!
Houston is often referred to as Space City since 1967. One reason why is because of Space Center Houston- the Visitors Center of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. I've been to Space Center Houston a few times in my life. Each time, I grow more and more fond of what all NASA does. Besides space exploration and exhibits, there are lots of fun activities for children (and adults). What I would strongly recommend is for you to go on a tram tour around Space Center Houston. Being able to see all the many attractions and such just gives you greater appreciation for all the work NASA does. You even get to see some of the many facilities used in preparing astronauts as well as in teaching people about being in space. Space Center Houston is both a fun place to go as well as an educational place to go. Your appreciation for all things NASA and in space travel will be greatly expressed when you visit Space Center Houston.

I have a picture I took of Space Center Houston, but it's not very good. So let me show you a picture from off the Internet of Space Center Houston:

--- New Blog Label! ---
This quick blog entry has a new blog label- Stars and Space. This blog label involves various topics regarding astronomy, space exploration, and various other space-related issues and topics. "John's Blog Space" is the name of my blog, and I thought it would be obvious to feature a blog label regarding stars and space.

--- If Any NASA Folk May Read This... ---
I am ALWAYS fascinated about NASA, and their tireless efforts are something I strongly support. All of you men and women serving for NASA are men and women I greatly admire. You are wonderful people. Keep up the great work in all of your space work- whether space exploration, spacewalks, maintaining orbiting crafts and orbital satellites, or whatever... I strongly support your incredible efforts. There is no shortage of fascination about what this universe has to offer.

So yeah... Space Center Houston. If you are visiting Houston or never been to Space Center Houston, I strongly advise you to check out Space Center Houston. After all, the experience this place provides will give you greater appreciation for space as well as Houston's aerospace history. How do you think some of Houston'sports teams got their names? Especially consider Houston teams like the Houston Rockets, Houston Astros, and the former Houston Comets WNBA franchise. Even my fascination with stars and space have fueled my love of nighttime as well as motivation for "John's Blog Space" and "John's Shop Space." So PLEASE- visit Space Center Houston and enjoy something that has played a HUGE role in the history of this great city. You can find it at 1601 NASA Parkway here in Houston.
